Road Education: FISALUD

Summary

At the Health Fair (FISALUD; IFEMA) and in collaboration with the José Pons Foundation, we carried out a workshop on road education, whose main objective was to work on an education in values. It was structured around two moments: First of all, the children were told a story created by another child and related to Road Education. With this story as a model they turned to creating one of their own with help from their parents.

Objective

  • To encourage boys and girls to have attitudes of respect for the traffic environment in collaboration with their families.

Implementation of the experience

At the Health Fair (FISALUD; IFEMA) and in collaboration with the José Pons Foundation, we carried out a workshop on road education (aimed at families with children aged between 3 and 12) whose main objective was to work on an education in values.

The workshop was based on Road Education resting on the following premises:

  • The educational activity must be based on training from a perspective of an education in values and in a comprehensive and systematic way, with the aim of raising the degree of citizen awareness and responsibility on mobility.
  • Road Education must be a continuous process that reaches all ages, although it must be founded during our earlier ages. Its objectives and contents will vary depending on the development of the individual and his or her level of independence from the traffic environment.
  • Road Education must be considered a responsibility and a task for everyone, i.e. the family, the school, the administration and the media, the whole society in general.

Based on these premises, we performed a play for the children (and their parents) that told the story of a No-Way sign which no-one respected.  Afterwards, children, helped by adults, had to make a drawing and invent a story regarding an issue related to road safety. The workshop ended with the exhibition of each of these stories created by the families.

Conclusion

Through this experience, children reflected upon Road Education and were able to share their ideas through their stories and drawings. It was very important for them to share their creations. Hence, on the “stand” we hung several posters with stories made by other children that served as a model for the elaboration of their own one.
